McNerney seemed nice enough until I asked him for a separate medication incase of a yeast infection, which my daughter has had all the time since her Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis 18 months ago. He tells me to have her drink a probiotic and use topical cream. I kindly tell him that her being so young and diabetic she is just chalk full of sugar it would be best for her to have it on hand and I will not use unless she needs it. We have used all other methods and exhausted them and have worked 18 months to get this down right for her. His voice changed and with a shaking cheek he say, "I have been doing this for 20 years and you know how many times I've prescribed diflucan??" And he holds his hand up with a 0. I gently told him she has been on it probably 12 times and not all the topical creams in the world phased it. He then told me, "and I've had plenty of diabetics." My little two babes were fighting over a paper and pen. His bark is far bigger than mine. See, I don't usually have a need to be "right". But since "this", this diabetes thing that we live with day in and day out around the clock. This diabetes that I am always watching my phone to see her current blood glucose numbers to make sure she isn't dropping and needs food or going to high and needs a shot. I have learned that although I am not a doctor, I have become a bit on an expert on my girl and her T1D. I have spent hours and hours in trainings for her, and just as the endocrinologist says, "You become the expert of your childs T1D more so than any doctor who theorizes about it." Doctor Mc Nerney was rude, and treated me as a child who knew nothing about what I was talking about because he is an MD of 20 years. His arrogance and his condescending attitude was hurtful and shameful. I went to my car and sobbed. His arrogance and inability to listen especially when I have a child with a life threatening disease was unfathomable. Perhaps he should consider working with animals. He seemed pleased with himself as he walked out the door floating on his air of correctness, after all he holds the script paper that stands between me and my daughter who can be in so much pain she bleeds. But hey, at least he has an MD to make him sleep better at night. It is people like him that make the interfacing of a heartbreaking diseases just that much more difficult and harsh. I will never go to him again and hope that no one else has to have this horrible experience. In a small community with little to no pediatric offices accepting new patients it is a horror this was the only option. If you are going to be a pediatric doctor you really should learn to listen to parents. Especially when they have medical needs above and beyond normal care.
